Mein Leben als Unternehmensberater: Zwischen Freiheit und Verpflichtungen

My life as a management consultant: Between freedom and obligations

As a management consultant in a dynamic consulting firm, I experience the exciting balance between two important dimensions on a daily basis: Time and place. These two aspects are fundamental to my professional activities and constantly present me with new challenges. In the following blog post, I would like to take a look at the flexible work environment at COMPLION.

Time: Trust working time and project commitments

As a management consultant, it is essential to operate in an environment characterized by constant change and different projects. This is where the concept of trust-based working hours comes into play. This means that I can flexibly arrange my working hours as long as I fulfill my obligations to clients and projects. This flexibility allows me to adapt my work to my individual needs and, for example, sometimes take care of a doctor's appointment or personal matters during working hours.

At the same time, commitments to our clients are a top priority. I am heavily involved in projects and client relationships that involve project meetings and deadlines. The challenge is to balance my free time management with the fixed appointments and deadlines. This is where effective self-organization is essential to manage the balancing act between trust work time and client demands.

In addition, the time dimension can also be characterized by overtime, especially when projects enter the decisive phase. But this is offset by the flexibility of trust-based working hours. An important point is my employer's trust in my personal responsibility and ability to complete my tasks efficiently outside the office. This trust creates a positive working atmosphere and strengthens commitment in the team.

Space: Home office and necessary travel

The second dimension that shapes my profession as a management consultant is the place where I work. Here, an interesting range of possibilities opens up for me.

With the increase in home office options in recent years, I can do a significant amount of my work from home. Thanks to modern technology, home office has long since ceased to be an exception and is now an established form of work. This allows me to flexibly design my workplace and work from anywhere in the world. I get more flexibility and save time that I would otherwise spend commuting. Home office allows me to work in a familiar environment and better balance my work with my personal life. Not only does this improve my personal work-life balance, but in a way it also contributes to sustainability by reducing emissions-generating travel to a necessary minimum.

Nevertheless, there are situations where I have to travel to the client's or project's location to attend meetings, lead workshops and maintain direct exchange with the client. This requires flexibility and a willingness to be on the road at times. Travel can be exhausting, but it allows me to make direct contact with clients and teammates. This is often critical to the success of a project, as personal relationships and face-to-face meetings build trust and foster efficient communication. The key here is to always plan efficiently and arrange travel in a way that adds value to our clients and project progress.

The ability to switch between home office and travel depends on the requirements of the current project or client. This versatility is one of the aspects of my job that I particularly value.

Conclusion

Overall, as a management consultant, I am able to master the challenges of the time and place dimension by cultivating my self-organization and flexibility. The trust-based working hours allow me to adapt my work to my individual needs, while the possibility of home office and travel make my work even more varied and exciting.

My job may be demanding and challenging, but it also offers me the freedom and versatility that I value. With the right balance of time and place, the focus is less on set hours in the office and more on achieving goals and successfully completing projects. This allows me to work flexibly and accomplish my tasks while maintaining a work-life balance.
